Chamberlayne Avenue Emergency Shelter

The Chamberlayne Avenue Emergency Shelter provides critical support to individuals experiencing homelessness in Richmond, with a focus on single men, inclement weather safety, and access to community resources. It is operated by The Salvation Army Central Virginia in partnership with the City of Richmond Human Services.

Each night during the inclement weather season, typically from November 15 through April 15, the shelter opens its doors at 5:00 p.m., offering overnight lodging through the next morning at 8:00 a.m. This service is available to both men and women, with space allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Guests receive two meals, a cot, and restroom access.

Additionally, there is a year-round shelter for single adult men, with a capacity of about 50 beds. Entrance to that shelter is arranged through the Homeward Homeless Connection Line.

Beyond overnight shelter, the facility also houses the Community Resource & Training Center (CRTC). This center offers wrap-around services including case management, referrals, and training to help individuals connect with longer-term supports such as healthcare, housing, skills development, and other stabilizing resources.

For those at risk of losing housing within a few days, the Homeless Connection Line works to help people avoid homelessness through problem solving, connecting to resources, and diversion where possible.
