CARES (Crisis Assistance Response Emergency Shelter)

Mission: CARES is dedicated to helping families regain stability, dignity, and self-sufficiency through emergency shelter and supportive services.

Service Area

CARES serves the Tri-Cities area, including Chesterfield, Colonial Heights, Dinwiddie, Hopewell, Petersburg, and Prince George. While the primary focus is on these communities, individuals and families in crisis from surrounding regions may also inquire about services.

Core Services

• Emergency Shelter: CARES operates the only emergency shelter for women and children in the Tri-Cities area, providing a safe and supportive environment for those experiencing homelessness.
• Food Pantry & Clothes Closet: Low-income residents can access essential food supplies and clothing. These resources are available to individuals and families who have nowhere else to turn for support.
• Workshops and Training: CARES offers workshops and training sessions to help clients build life skills and prepare for self-sufficiency.
• Job Search Assistance & Networking: The organization provides job search support and networking opportunities to help clients secure employment.
• Educational Support: An Educational Coordinator ensures that children staying at the shelter are enrolled in school, receive necessary supplies, and have access to enrichment activities and tutoring to support academic success.

Community Engagement

• Volunteer Opportunities: Community members can volunteer at the shelter, food pantry, or service center.
• Donations: CARES accepts donations of food, clothing, household items, and monetary contributions. There is an ongoing need for diapers, cleaning supplies, hygiene items, and gently used clothing or household goods.
• Fundraising & Advocacy: Individuals and groups can organize fundraising events or campaigns and help raise awareness about homelessness and poverty in the community.
