Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department

Overview:
The Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department is a 100% volunteer emergency response organization that has served the Town and County of Appomattox since its founding in 1927. The department is staffed by 30 volunteer firefighters and operates a fleet that includes 3 engines, 1 ladder truck, 1 tanker, 2 crash response vehicles, 2 brush trucks, a command vehicle, and two water rescue boats.

Services Provided:

• Fire Suppression: Responds to structure fires and wildfires.
• Rescue Operations: Handles technical rescues, including water rescues and vehicle extrications.
• Hazardous Materials Response: Manages incidents involving hazardous materials.
• Emergency Response: Responds to motor vehicle crashes and a wide variety of emergency situations (56 different types of incidents in the last year).

Mission and Operations:

• Dedicated to protecting life and property in Appomattox County through rapid emergency response.
• Operates entirely with volunteer personnel, emphasizing community service and safety.
• Responds to approximately 300 calls for service annually, with a record high of 368 calls in 2018.

Service Area:

• Initially served the Town of Appomattox but now covers the entire County of Appomattox.

• Emergency response services are available to all residents and visitors within Appomattox County.
