Appomattox Community & Disaster Relief Organization

Mission:
The Appomattox Community & Disaster Relief Organization is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to supporting Appomattox County and its citizens, with a focus on providing assistance during natural disasters, emergencies, and other critical events. The organization is committed to ensuring that all citizens, regardless of background, have the opportunity for a better life and are supported in times of crisis.

Core Services:

• Disaster & Emergency Relief:
• Assists local and state law enforcement, emergency management agencies, and national disaster relief organizations (such as the Red Cross and FEMA) during natural disasters or states of emergency.
• Provides direct aid to community members affected by disasters, especially those in rural areas not immediately served by other agencies.

• Offers services such as emergency transportation, road clearing, traffic control, search and rescue (including horse-mounted teams and drones), land clearing, firefighting support, emergency communications, shelter construction, and security services.

• Community Education:

• Delivers educational programs on life-saving measures and preparedness for natural and unnatural disasters.
• Offers in-person presentations, online materials, certification classes (such as First Aid and CPR), and other training events.

• Topics include food storage, sustainable farming, survival training, disaster preparedness, and emergency communications planning.

• Emergency First Aid:

• Utilizes volunteers with medical training (EMTs, nurses) to provide emergency first aid, medical transportation, field hospital setup, and warming/cooling centers during disasters.

• These services are coordinated with local emergency response agencies and are only deployed in times of disaster.

• Community Outreach & Assistance:

• Provides emergency housing and utility assistance, food and clothing support, help with medical appointments, and assistance in maintaining safe living conditions.
• Supports local agencies at public events with first aid, cooling stations, crowd control, and lost-and-found services.
• Assists with clearing debris after severe weather and maintains emergency communications through licensed radio operators.

Additional Information:

• The organization works in partnership with the Appomattox County Militia for specialized emergency response capabilities.
• Most educational resources are free, though some certification courses may have nominal fees.
• Services are available to the community at large when needs are identified, and requests can be submitted through a service request form.
