Mission:
The Cumberland County Department of Social Services is dedicated to providing excellent services to individuals, families, and the community in a respectful manner. The agency encourages self-sufficiency, strives to preserve and restore families, and works to protect the well-being of children, the elderly, and disabled individuals.
Services Provided:
- Benefit Programs: Assistance with applications for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly Food Stamps) and other public benefits. Applications can be obtained in person, online, or by mail, and may be submitted through various methods including in-person, fax, mail, or electronically.
- Service Programs: Programs designed to support families, children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities, with a focus on self-sufficiency and family preservation.
- Resource Referrals: The department provides referrals to a variety of local and regional resources, including:
- Central Virginia Health Center (medical services on a sliding scale)
- Delma's Pantry (food bank)
- FreeClinicPowhatan (free medical, dental, and behavioral health services for surrounding counties)
- Goochland Cares (free medical care for adults in Goochland, Louisa, Columbia, Fluvanna, and Cumberland who cannot afford health insurance)
- Piedmont Habitat for Humanity (affordable housing assistance)
- STEPS Inc. (housing, education, workforce, and economic development)
- Virginia Career Works South Central Region (job search and employment resources)
- Crisis Support: Information about SCVP (Madeline's House and SAVE), which offers counseling, crisis intervention, advocacy, accompaniment, resources, referrals, education, evidence recovery, and shelter for those affected by domestic and sexual violence in Southside Virginia.
Eligibility:
Eligibility for benefit programs varies and is determined by specific program rules. Residents are encouraged to apply even if they are unsure of eligibility, as different programs have different requirements.
