Overview

Founded in 1979, the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals with Down syndrome and their families across the United States, including those in Louisa County, VA and surrounding regions. NDSS achieves its mission through a comprehensive approach that includes advocacy, resource provision, and community engagement.

Key Program Areas

• Resources & Support:
• Provides free resources and information for individuals with Down syndrome, their families, caregivers, and the public, covering topics such as health, wellness, education, employment, adulthood, aging, financial wellness, and information for new and expectant parents.
• Offers events, videos, publications, and a helpline to answer questions and connect individuals to a network of over 300 local Down syndrome organizations.

• Hosts the Adult Summit conference, which addresses the needs of teens and adults with Down syndrome, offering practical resources and educational opportunities for families, caregivers, and professionals.

• Advocacy & Policy:

• Advocates for federal, state, and local policies that positively impact people with Down syndrome, including healthcare, education, employment, and economic self-sufficiency.
• Empowers community advocates to work with government officials and participate in the NDSS Down Syndrome Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C.

• Provides grassroots advocacy resources and action alerts to mobilize the community.

• Community Engagement:

• Organizes national and local events to celebrate individuals with Down syndrome, raise public awareness, and foster community connections.
• Administers scholarships, grants, and awards to support individuals with Down syndrome in pursuing their goals.
• Runs the National Buddy Walk® Program, which promotes awareness and inclusion and raises funds for Down syndrome support organizations.
• Hosts awareness events such as the New York City Buddy Walk®, Times Square Video presentation, Racing for 3.21, Run for 3.21, and other galas and golf events.

Who NDSS Serves

NDSS serves individuals with Down syndrome, their families, caregivers, professionals, and the broader community throughout the United States. There are no geographic restrictions, and Louisa County residents are eligible to access all resources, advocacy opportunities, and support services.

• Services and resources are available to all individuals with Down syndrome, their families, and caregivers, regardless of location.
• Participation in advocacy and community engagement events is open to the public.
