Virginia Assistive Technology System (VATS)

Mission:
The Virginia Assistive Technology System (VATS) is dedicated to ensuring that Virginians of all ages and abilities can acquire appropriate, affordable assistive and information technologies and services necessary for active participation in society.

Overview

VATS is a statewide program authorized and funded by the Assistive Technology Act of 2004 and administered by the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS). Established in 1990, VATS focuses on increasing awareness, accessibility, and acquisition of assistive technology for individuals with disabilities. The program is guided by an Advisory Council that includes individuals with disabilities, family members, and representatives from Virginia's disability service agencies.

Services Provided

• Information and Assistance Training and Technical Assistance Program:
• Provides information on assistive technology products, funding options, and resources.
• Connects individuals to therapists, service providers, and vendors of assistive technology devices and services.
• Assistive Technology (AT) Device Demonstration and Loan Program:
• Offers hands-on demonstrations of specific devices or software at an extensive AT library.
• Allows Virginians with disabilities, their families, and service providers to borrow equipment on a short-term basis (typically 1-4 weeks), subject to need and availability.
• Assistive Technology (AT) Device Exchange and Reuse Program:
• Facilitates the sale or donation of gently used equipment and enables requests for specific equipment through an online form.
• Partners with the Foundation for Rehabilitation Equipment & Endowment (F.R.E.E.) and Children’s Assistive Technology Service (CATS) to provide full-service durable medical equipment (DME) reuse for adults and children with limited resources or insurance gaps.

Eligibility and Service Area

• Services are available to any Virginian with a disability, their family members, and service providers who work with individuals with disabilities.
• Programs are accessible statewide, including residents of Louisa County and surrounding regions.
