Town of Ashland
About This Service
Overview:
Ashland Helping Ashland (AHA!) is a community-led tool and equipment lending program operated by the Town of Ashland. The program is designed to support residents and organizations in maintaining their properties and complying with local zoning codes, especially in situations where individuals may lack the necessary resources to address property maintenance issues on their own.
Mission and Purpose:
AHA! aims to provide a positive, volunteer-driven alternative to traditional zoning code enforcement, which often relies on legal processes and penalties. The program encourages voluntary compliance and community assistance, fostering a spirit of neighborly support and civic engagement.
Services Provided:
- Free Tool & Equipment Lending: Residents and qualifying organizations can borrow a wide range of tools and equipment, including lawn mowers, trimmers, leaf blowers, tarps, and more, at no cost.
- Tool Lending Trailer: The entire trailer or individual tools can be reserved for up to 14 days. Helpers must pick up and return items at the Town Maintenance Shop during designated hours.
- Volunteer Opportunities: Community members, known as "Helpers," can use the tools to assist neighbors ("Receivers") who are unable to maintain their properties due to physical or financial limitations.
- Training Resources: Required training videos are provided for safe operation of battery-powered and other equipment.
- Waiver and Release: All Helpers must sign a waiver and, if using battery-operated equipment, complete the relevant training.
Eligibility and Participation:
- Helpers: Must be Ashland residents or organizations based in or with a significant presence in Ashland. Ashland property owners who need tools for their own property are also eligible.
- Receivers: Must be residents of Ashland.
- Rental Restrictions: Tools and equipment may not be taken outside the Town Limits of Ashland.
Program Administration:
- Operated as part of the Town's Neighborhood Services Program, which seeks to resolve zoning compliance issues through community engagement before resorting to legal action.
- Rental requests should be submitted at least 7 days in advance.
- Pick-up and drop-off are by appointment, Monday-Thursday, 7:30 AM-3:00 PM.
