Mission:
The Virginia Head Start Association (VHSA) is dedicated to training, advocacy, and support for individuals and organizations that impact the lives of children and families across Virginia, including Louisa County and surrounding regions.

Overview

VHSA serves as a backbone for all Head Start programs in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The association provides a comprehensive support system for early childhood professionals, Head Start staff, children, and families. VHSA is committed to ensuring high-quality early childhood education and family support services for children from birth through age five.

Services and Programs

• Professional Development: Offers quality professional development opportunities for early childhood educators and service providers in all service areas.
• Advocacy: Engages in advocacy efforts to support and protect Head Start programs at the local, state, and national levels. Provides tools and resources for community members to take action and influence policy.
• Networking: Facilitates connections among early childhood professionals through networks such as the Director’s Network, Education Network, Family Services Network, and Health Services Network.
• Resource Sharing: Supplies valuable resources, encouragement, and support to Head Start programs and their staff, especially during challenging times.
• Conferences and Training: Hosts annual conferences, summits, and institutes focused on health, family, and education to enhance the skills and knowledge of Head Start professionals.
• Scholarships: Administers scholarships such as The Elmore Scholarship and the Virginia Head Start Alumni High School Senior Scholarship to support educational advancement.

• Children from birth to age five and their families, especially those from low-income backgrounds.
• Early childhood professionals, Head Start staff, and program administrators across Virginia.
• Residents of Louisa County and neighboring regions who participate in or are eligible for Head Start programs.

Eligibility

Eligibility for direct Head Start services is typically based on family income and other criteria as determined by local Head Start programs. VHSA itself provides support, advocacy, and professional development for Head Start programs and staff statewide.
