Veterans Crisis Line

Mission:
The Veterans Crisis Line provides immediate, confidential crisis support to Veterans, service members, National Guard and Reserve members, and their families and friends. The service is available 24/7 and is designed to assist individuals experiencing emotional distress, thoughts of suicide, or other mental health crises.

Services Offered:

• 24/7 Crisis Support: Access to trained responders via phone (Dial 988, then Press 1), online chat, or text (838255).
• Confidential Communication: All interactions are confidential, and individuals decide how much information to share. Support is available regardless of VA enrollment or discharge status.
• Connection to Local Resources: Responders can connect individuals with local suicide prevention coordinators at VA medical centers or other community resources for ongoing support.
• Caring Letters Program: Veterans who contact the Crisis Line may receive a series of supportive letters over a year, designed to foster a sense of connection and care.
• Peer Support Outreach Call Center: Trained Veteran peer specialists proactively reach out to callers who may benefit from additional support, helping to reduce barriers to care and encourage continued engagement with mental health services.

Who They Serve:

• All Veterans, regardless of when, where, or how they served, or their discharge status.
• Active-duty service members, including National Guard and Reserve members.
• Family members and friends concerned about a Veteran or service member.

Eligibility Requirements:

• No requirement to be enrolled in VA benefits or health care.
• Services are available to anyone concerned about a Veteran or service member in crisis.

Service Area:

• Nationwide, including Louisa County, VA and all surrounding regions. Support is accessible to anyone in the United States and to service members and families overseas.

Additional Information:

• The Veterans Crisis Line coordinates with local emergency services if an individual is in imminent danger.
• After initial contact, follow-up support is available through local suicide prevention coordinators.
• The service is free of charge.
