Healthy Generations Area Agency on Aging

Mission:
Healthy Generations Area Agency on Aging (HGAAA), formerly known as Rappahannock Area Agency on Aging, is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for all older citizens. The organization provides home and community-based services to support the continued independence, safety, and health and wellness of the senior population.

Service Area

HGAAA serves the George Washington Planning District (PD16), which includes the City of Fredericksburg and the counties of Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania, and Stafford. Louisa County residents may access services, especially those that are regional or referral-based.

Core Services

• Emergency Assistance: Financial aid and resource referrals for individuals 60 and older facing emergencies that threaten health or well-being.
• Home Delivered Meals: Nutritional support for homebound seniors unable to prepare meals.
• Homemaker Services: Light housekeeping, essential shopping, and small meal preparation for those unable to perform these tasks.
• Information & Referral: Assessment and referral to agency or community services, including advocacy as needed.
• Legal Assistance (Referral): Funding to Rappahannock Legal Services for legal help to seniors (60+) with economic or social needs.
• Long-Term Care Ombudsman: Advocacy for seniors receiving long-term care, whether in facilities or at home, including information and assistance to resolve care problems.
• Mobility Options Transportation: Transportation education, information, and limited door-to-door services for seniors and people with disabilities, including travel training for regional transit.
• Options Counseling: Person-centered counseling for those 60+ or adults with disabilities to understand and access available supports.
• Senior Cafes: Nutritional, social, recreational, and physical activities, plus transportation and shopping for eligible seniors (assessment required).
• Senior Community Service Employment Program (Title V): Job training and community service employment for low-income, unemployed individuals aged 55+.
• Telephone Reassurance: Regular, scheduled calls to homebound seniors to reduce isolation and provide safety checks.
• Transportation Services: For seniors 60+ lacking transportation, with priority for those in greatest economic and social need, especially in rural or isolated areas.
• Virginia Insurance Counseling Assistance Program (VICAP): Free, confidential insurance counseling for Medicare beneficiaries, including help with claims, billing, and benefits.
• Virginia Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP): Outreach, counseling, and education to prevent, detect, and report Medicare fraud, errors, and abuse.

Eligibility

• Most services are for individuals aged 60 and older, with some programs available to adults with disabilities (18+).
• Some programs require assessment or meet income/unemployment criteria (e.g., Title V employment program).
