About This Service

Purpose and Mission:
The Hanover County Board of Supervisors serves as the primary governing body for Hanover County, Virginia. Its mission is to provide leadership, formulate policies, and make decisions that guide the overall direction of county government. The Board is responsible for setting the annual county budget, passing ordinances, and making decisions on rezoning and other land use matters.

Governance and Structure:

  • The Board consists of seven members, each elected by voters from one of Hanover County's seven magisterial districts.
  • Members serve four-year terms.
  • The Board generally meets on the second Wednesday at 2 p.m. and the fourth Wednesday at 6 p.m. Special meetings may be scheduled as needed. During June, July, and August, only one meeting is held on the fourth Wednesday; in November and December, the meeting is on the second Wednesday.

Public Participation:

  • All Board meetings are open to the public.
  • A designated 'citizens’ time' at the beginning of each meeting allows any citizen to address the Board for up to five minutes on matters within the Board’s authority that are not on the agenda for a public hearing.

Services and Functions:

  • Policy and Budget: Sets the county’s annual budget and formulates policies affecting all aspects of county operations.
  • Land Use and Ordinances: Makes decisions on rezoning, land use, and passes ordinances that impact residents and businesses.
  • Community Engagement: Provides opportunities for public input and engagement through open meetings and direct contact with Board representatives.

Service Area and Accessibility:

  • The Board governs all of Hanover County and its decisions impact residents, businesses, and organizations within the county. Residents of neighboring counties, including Louisa County, may interact with the Board on regional matters or joint initiatives.

Additional Information:

  • Board meetings have been video streamed since October 14, 2015, increasing transparency and accessibility for the public.
  • The Board also oversees various committees, commissions, and special projects that address specific community needs.
