About This Service

Mission:
The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) is a federally funded initiative administered by the U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration. The program's mission is to help low-income, unemployed individuals aged 55 and older gain job skills and work experience to facilitate their transition into unsubsidized employment.

Services Provided:

  • Paid Community Service Training: SCSEP participants are placed in part-time, paid community service positions at public agencies or nonprofit organizations, such as schools, hospitals, libraries, and senior centers.
  • Job Readiness and Skills Development: The program offers training in job skills, resume writing, interview techniques, and other employment-related competencies.
  • Job Placement Assistance: SCSEP assists participants in finding unsubsidized employment opportunities in the broader workforce.
  • Supportive Services: Participants may receive supportive services to help overcome barriers to employment, such as transportation or referrals to additional resources.

Who They Serve:

  • Individuals aged 55 and older
  • Must be unemployed and have a family income of no more than 125% of the federal poverty level
  • U.S. citizens or legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Residents of all U.S. states and territories, including Louisa County, VA and surrounding regions

Service Area:

SCSEP operates nationwide through a network of 75 grantees, including 19 national nonprofit organizations and 56 state and territorial government agencies. Local projects are often coordinated with Area Agencies on Aging or community-based organizations. Residents of Louisa County, VA can access SCSEP services through local American Job Centers or by using the CareerOneStop Older Worker Program Finder.
