About This Service

Mission: Health Brigade, formerly known as FAN FREE CLINIC, is Virginia’s oldest free and charitable clinic, dedicated to providing exceptional health services to those least served in a caring and non-judgmental environment. The organization is committed to serving marginalized populations, including low-income, uninsured individuals, Medicaid recipients, and those most oppressed and stigmatized in the community.

Service Areas

  • Health Brigade serves a wide region in Virginia, including Louisa County and numerous surrounding counties and cities. Residency in one of these service areas for at least 6 months is required for most services.

Core Services

  • Primary Care: Comprehensive medical care for eligible clients.
  • Mental Health & Wellness: Mental health services for those qualifying under income and residency guidelines.
  • HIV/STI Testing Services: Free HIV, Hepatitis C, gonorrhea, and chlamydia testing is available to anyone, regardless of eligibility for other services. Testing is by appointment.
  • Needle Exchange: Harm reduction services for individuals who use injection drugs.
  • Ryan White Services: Support and care coordination for people living with HIV.
  • Trans Health: Specialized services for transgender individuals.
  • Community Outreach & Care Coordination: Assistance with accessing medications, labs, imaging, and specialty care.
  • PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis): Available to anyone interested, with screening to determine medication cost.

Eligibility Requirements

  • No medical insurance (including employer, Medicare Parts B, C, & D, or Veterans Benefits), or not eligible for these programs. Medicaid is accepted.
  • Residency in a listed service area (including Louisa County) for at least 6 months.
  • Income between 139-200% of the Federal Poverty Line.
  • All new and current clients must complete a registration appointment and renew annually.
  • HIV, Hep C, and STI testing, as well as PrEP, are available to all regardless of insurance or income status.

Registration Process

  • Registration appointments are required and include eligibility screening and paperwork completion. Clients must bring a photo ID and two months of income documentation. The process helps determine eligibility and connects clients to additional support services.

Commitment

Health Brigade is recognized as a safe and inclusive space, especially for those with few resources or who face stigma and oppression. The organization’s 55-year legacy reflects a deep commitment to adapting to the changing health needs of the community.
