JABA (Jefferson Area Board for Aging) is a private, non-profit Area Agency on Aging serving adults (60+), adults with disabilities, caregivers, and community members of all income levels in Central Virginia. Founded in 1975 and incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit in 1986, JABA has been dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for people as they age and creating healthier communities for nearly five decades.
Comprehensive Programs and Services
JABA offers a wide range of innovative programs and services designed to empower greater independence, promote healthy aging, foster dignity and fulfillment, and celebrate the contributions that older adults invest in communities:
Aging Services Coordination
One-on-one support for those 60+, living with disabilities, or caregiving who may have complex needs and require help signing up for services. This personalized assistance helps navigate the often complex landscape of aging services and ensures individuals receive the support they need.
Caregiver Support
Comprehensive tools and resources to equip caregivers in their caregiving journey. The program provides resources that support caregivers' own well-being, enabling them to care for their loved ones better and longer. This includes caregiver support groups and educational resources.
Community Centers
Designed for older adults 60+, these centers provide opportunities to create meaningful friendships and connections while enjoying delicious lunches and engaging activities. The centers serve as vital social hubs that combat isolation and promote community engagement.
Friends in Schools Helping (FISH) Program
A mentorship program where volunteer mentors provide students from pre-school to high school with meaningful support both academically and emotionally. This intergenerational program benefits both students and volunteer mentors.
Home Delivered Meals
For eligible low-income, homebound older adults, this program provides delicious, healthy meals delivered directly to their doors through Mom's Meals. This essential service ensures nutritional needs are met for those who cannot easily access or prepare meals.
Insurance Counseling
Free, unbiased Medicare counseling provided year-round and during Open Enrollment periods. This service helps older adults navigate the complex Medicare system and make informed decisions about their healthcare coverage.
Ombudsman Program
Advocates for residents in assisted living, nursing, or in-home care settings to ensure their rights are respected and valued. The Ombudsman provides free and confidential advocacy services.
Respite and Enrichment Centers (REC)
Specialized centers that provide a place where everyone is engaged, included, and valued. These centers specifically support those living with dementia or disabilities, offering respite for caregivers and enriching activities for participants.
